Running, Running and Running

We are always running, whether we know it or not. The question is to where. Are we running towards a better job, retirement, soulmate, kids or even enlightenment. There is another destination beyond all these mini goals and that is where we all finish our race or start a new one depending on what you believe. Well, I am talking about Death – clutches of Lord Yama who never fails to collect his dues.

dying 1

We are all running towards death – most people don’t like to talk about it as if it doesn’t exist. Some think it’s morbid and dampens their spirits. Regardless, we are all going to die or leave our physical bodies. This is happening as I write, with every breath I take I am using up my life force.

Now, that we have established that we are running towards death – what next? Does this mean that with every birthday I start crying and lamenting that I am a year closer to dying? And this leads us right into one of my favorite quotes.
dying

The question now becomes what do we with what we have been given. One option is to do as much as you can before your die. Another option is to just sit like a vegetable as we are going to die right? Well, the vegetable option is definitely gone because our minds have so much energy in what they think that it will be near impossible for a normal human being to sit quietly for the rest of his life. [World would be a better place if we could!]

We could try and do as much as we can.. we can try. But then our desires are unlimited and will remain so, there will always be the next thing. So does this mean that we will never be able to fulfill all that our heart desires?

STORYTIME

The following story is one that’s been circulating for awhile.

A professor of philosophy stood before his class with some items in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a large empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks about two inches in diameter. He then asked the students if the jar was full.

They agreed that it was full.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly and watched as the pebbles rolled into the open areas between the rocks. The professor then asked the students again if the jar was full.

They chuckled and agreed that it was indeed full this time.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. The sand filled the remaining open areas of the jar. “Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar signifies your life. The rocks are the truly important things, such as family, health and relationships. If all else was lost and only the rocks remained, your life would still be meaningful. The pebbles are the other things that matter in your life, such as work or school. The sand signifies the remaining “small stuff” and material possessions.

If you put sand into the jar first, there is no room for the rocks or the pebbles. The same can be applied to your lives. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are truly important.

One way to keep a check if you are filling your life jar with sands, pebbles or stones is to ask, “If I was to do die tomorrow, then what would I do now?”

As we are running towards death the least we can do is to have fun while we are at it.

EEE – easy, effortless and enjoyable

Right, before we get into the article let me say something overarching about almost all the posts that I write – that we all have a belief or a mental model of how we live our life. We might think we don’t but we do, the fact that we think we don’t is a model too.

In this post I am discussing a fundamental belief about Control, the belief being that we are never in control, control is the biggest illusion of all. That being said, let’s move on.
control1

How did I get the idea of this post? Give credit where due.. [Drums roll].. and the credit goes to Aki
aki control

How you ask? Let me give you an example,
When we go on a walk, I usually lead Aki but for some mysterious reason he doesn’t want to walk on the right side of the road anymore. And I being who I am tried to do it a few times forcefully, sweating, waiting every few minutes for him to sniff every blade of grass on the way and getting very annoyed in the process. Until one day I decided to go where he wanted to go – he looked straight ahead, we crossed the road and walked happily or rather sprinted on the left side of the road.

So the moral of the story or rather example is that if we align ourselves to the will of the universe then we can sprint along life easily, effortlessly, and enjoyably. On the other hand, if we decide that we who are like tiny specks of dusts in this otherwise perfectly managed universe know better and go our own way it can be a little frustrating at times.

And I cannot help but post this cartoon here.

You can argue that by taking the left side of the road I am being lazy and taking a cop-out route. Is it really being lazy? I am still doing the work just not in the manner I envisaged – that’s the key “I envisaged”. We think we know it all, we know where we are going and how to get there? But what if we lived with the belief that the universe or another overarching force knows what’s best for us and all we have to do is to listen and follow it wherever it takes – be it cleaning toilets or living in a mansion.

Living in a mansion sounds great, cleaning toilet doesn’t but what if cleaning toilets led you to living in a mansion except you just don’t know that. And what does living in the mansion really mean.

It doesn’t mean that you quit your job and wait for the universe to give you a lottery ticket, it means having faith that things happen for a reason. Next time your flight is delayed or you are stuck in a traffic jam – maybe you will think of this post and wonder…And in summary I leave with a quote:

If what you want happens then good,
If what you doesn’t what happens then even better,
Why? – because that’s the will of god or universe.

Kids These Days

I did a volunteering for a local temple teaching kids science for a few months. It was not only entertaining but also very comforting – there’s something about their innocence which gives you a warm and cozy feeling.

I thought I might share a few stories from those days today

frog

Peekaboo: The lesson was about frog life cycle and I explained to them how the mother frog leaves her babies and goes off. This concept was very hard for them to digest as how can a mother frog just leave her babies, right! Well, once we got past the horror of abandoned babies

I asked: “How does the mother frog protect her babies?”
One Kid : ” She comes back to check on them.”
Other Kid: “She is always with them.”
And then one kid said, “I know.”
I nodded for him to continue and he responded with a smug smile, “She installs a web cam.”

trumpet

Charge: A Father reads bedtime story to his two daughters about a boy and his trumpet. The boy’s friend accidentally kicks a ball into the trumpet and no noise comes out of the trumpet. The dad asks his daughters as to what might be the reason.
They think and think and finally the elder one says, “I know what it is. The trumpet needs new batteries”

The kids these days, eh!

Bollywood Dance Masti – the journey.

plane

When we moved from London to Columbus I decided to take a conscious break to do nothing. I found it quite hard to do ‘nothing’ that is and not to mention that I was driving Adam crazy with all my ideas on what I can do.

As a part of doing nothing I decided to take up the twelve week course as designed in Artist Way. To my surprise it did inspire a creative spark in me. As one morning I woke up and decided that starting a Bollywood Dance Class is the way to go. I met Adam for lunch and told him about my great idea and being a project manager at heart I had a mini plan ready.

Me: So what do you think? [After I showed my detailed plan to him]
Adam: When did you have this idea? [As I had never mentioned this to him before]
Me: This morning [looking very sheepish]

And that was that – I didn’t think about it more, assumed it was going to be a passing idea. And then a month later we went to a retreat as a part of the Creativity and Personal Mastery course we took in London Business School. And as the name indicates it helps you discover your creative self by knowing more about yourself. And I am forever grateful to my fellow CPMers who encouraged me to go ahead with my idea of starting a dance class. The positive energy that I got from the retreat created a momentum which even I couldn’t stop. I got back from the retreat created my Bollywood Company. Advertised through Living Social and Facebook and I was an entrepreneur.

When you are in flow things do fall into place and that’s exactly what happened. People showed up – We all helped each other enjoy dance and soon a community was formed which keeps giving.

Here’s to all the Bollywood Dance Masti Dancers. Love you all.
